Adjusting to a New Normal: A Message To Our Readers, Advertisers and Community:

Mar 19, 2020 10:49AM ● By Erica Shames

Susquehanna Life magazine is all about accentuating the positive aspects of life in Pennsylvania. At this time, it may be difficult to see that perspective, but we encourage you to stay upbeat, and focus on all the things we have to be grateful for.

First and foremost, we ask that you do everything possible to keep yourself and your family safe from the Coronavirus by following the recommendations of the World Health Organization and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. You can find their advisories here and here

At the discretion of Governor Wolfe, all nonessential businesses have been asked to close their doors. (Although the sign on our door reads closed, our publisher Erica Shames is in the back, working feverishly a few hours a day.)

It's important for us all to support the small businesses that are the lifeblood of our communities. Here's how:

- Even though restaurants may be closed, many are still offering take-out. Order often and tip generously.

- Purchase gift cards from local businesses online.

And it's equally important to support our neighbors. Here are some ideas:

- When you're running out for groceries, ask your neighbors if you can pick up something for them.

- Check in with elderly neighbors to make sure they are safe and well. If they need medical assistance, offer to drive them to the hospital.

- Call a friend you haven't spoken to in a while to make sure they are safe, and to see if they need your help.

If you're finding it difficult to maintain a positive frame of mind, we encourage you to access the content of the Spring 2020 issue of Susquehanna Life magazine -- it's all online at You'll find uplifting articles about ways to enjoy the spring weather that still fall within the recommendations of government health organizations--like taking a walk or hike (nature conservancy and state park hikes are still open!); visiting regional gardens; and trying out recipes. One note of caution: before venturing out to any of the events listed in the magazine or on the website, check first to make sure they are still taking place.

We also encourage you to listen to the accompanying podcast, Susquehanna Life Out Loud. The spring 2020 edition, Susquehanna Living in a Time of Corona Virus, can be accessed here

It's full of ideas of how to stay safe, and how to spend your time, that are specific to the Susquehanna Valley.

We thank you for your support, and for joining us in supporting members of our communities.

Stay healthy and stay safe, and together we will get through this.

Best wishes, The Susquehanna Life magazine team
