Winter Illumination 2018: Preserving American Treasures

In wilderness is the preservation of the world.

Henry David Thoreau

These words, popularized in Thoreau’s essay, “Walking,” published in the June 1862 issue of The Atlantic,  served as a catalyst that inspired others to save the Maine woods, Cape Cod, Yosemite and other treasured American landscapes.

Visit to read the New York Times article, “Thoreau’s Wilderness Legacy, Beyond the Shores of Walden Pond,” by Douglas Brinkley (July 7, 2017) that chronicles Thoreau’s lasting impact.
