At one time, the U.S. had more than 4,000 miles of canals.
At its peak (mid-1800s) Pennsylvania had 1,356 miles of working canals—more canals than any other state.
The Union Canal was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1994.
Boat Rides on the Union Canal
(Each Sunday, June through October, 12:30 to 4:30 p.m.)
Take a fascinating ride through history on an authentic canal boat as it wends its way through an iconic tunnel. $6/Adult, $3/Child. Children under 6 ride free. Please call ahead to confirm boat availability.
(September 26-28, 2014)
Re-enactors dressed in Civil War costume will encamp at the tunnel. A variety of family-oriented events, including staged battles, are scheduled for the weekend.
Scare Affair at the Union Canal Tunnel Park
(October 23-25, 2014)
The park will be alive with the frightening sounds of Halloween. Unearthly rides through the gloomy tunnel will depart every 25 minutes. Beware of ghosts and goblins that lurk in the darkness!
