The 17th Corps Field Hospital & Patriot Daughters of Lancaster

Living historians of the 17th Corps Field Hospital and Patriot Daughters of Lancaster will help you discover the stories of the soldiers, surgeons and civilians of Gettysburg–just minutes from the battlefield. The groups will exhibit and demonstrate Union Civil War Medicine to include: making pills, nursing & nutrition, medicines in use during the war, medical instruments including a pocket and capital amputation kit & sick call demonstration and types of illnesses that appeared at the daily sick call. A ladies aid society from Lancaster City that was formed immediately after the firing on Fort Sumter will be portrayed. The ladies’ purpose was to provide money, food, clothing, bandages and other supplies for soldiers serving in local companies of PA regiments. The ladies nursed at Christ Lutheran Church in Gettysburg and the Lutheran Seminary. They held sanitary fairs and bazaars to raise money for the cause.
