Jan 02, 2017 11:34AM ● By Erica Shames
Joseph Rebar, an Edward Abbey Hiking Club leader and park volunteer, led a 2+-mile First-Day hike at R.B. Winter State Park on New Year's Day.

First-Day Hikes, held in state and national parks nationwide, are a great way to herald in the new year. By participating in an outdoor activity, participants set the pace for a positive year ahead.

A total of 23 people and three dogs celebrated the New year with a hike up Overlook Trail to enjoy  a wintry view of the  lake and surrounding forested valleys and ridges.  The walk continued down Boiling Spring Trail though forests that provided glimpses of winter birds and wildlife. One section of the trail includes a rise of 300 feet over a 1/2-mile climb.  This section of the trail includes rocky terrain, switch backs and and some steep steps.  The rest of the hike is rated as moderate.
