Every once in a while—a few times in a lifetime, if you’re lucky—an opportunity comes along that propels your life forward in ways you couldn’t have predicted. Starting Susquehanna Life magazine was one such opportunity. So was marrying Tony and having our children, Justin, Ben and Jordan. Moving to Lewisburg from Manhattan would fall into that category.
Last fall, I had the unexpected pleasure to be hired as Susquehanna University’s first Professional-in-Residence, and to teach a course on magazine publishing. I never envisioned myself as a teacher. I always knew I wanted to be a writer, and then had the idea to start the region’s first lifestyle magazine—and went for it.
Now that I’ve amassed 23 years of experience running a magazine, there is so much I feel compelled to share; I’m grateful to have been given the opportunity to do so.
This magazine business—as is the case for most small businesses with an entrepreneurial bent—has been a learn-as-you-go enterprise. To be able to share what I’ve learned with the next generation? Maybe even someone who might want to start their own magazine? Priceless!
Each week was devoted to a different aspect of magazine publishing—from how and why I started Susquehanna Life magazine and the unique challenge (and opportunity) presented by the Internet to careers in magazine publishing. We skyped with some of my suppliers—our creative director Simone Tieber; our Web site and social media partner Locable.com CEO Brian Ostrovsky; and our newsstand distributor, Mary Jane Burns, president of Publisher’s Distribution Group. How rewarding it was for the students to benefit from these professionals’ knowledge and experience.
This winter issue includes three articles penned by my students: Jenna Danyew, Maribeth Guarino and Emily Gibbs. I hope you enjoy reading their articles and are impressed, as I was, with the writing talent they reveal!
As we close our 23rd year, I’d like to pause and publicly thank our advertisers, subscribers, readers and suppliers. We are grateful for your support and encouragement in this endeavor to uncover and present in each issue the best the region has to offer.
Enjoy the winter season and the holidays with your friends and family—and don’t forget to be grateful for all the good people (and opportunities) in your life.
