Erica Shames, founder and publisher of Susquehanna Life magazine, has been hired as Susquehanna University's first Professional-in-Residence. Shames will teach the course, ENGL:520-R1, Practicum: Magazine Publishing and Editing, for the Fall semester.
Under the guidance of Erica Shames, students will gain hands-on experience with various jobs required in magazine publishing and hone the skills necessary to perform those duties by creating—including writing, editing and proofreading—the content of the winter 2016/2017 issue of Susquehanna Life magazine.
This is a real-world practicum with firm, unalterable deadlines. Students enrolled in the class, which meets for the first time Aug. 31, must familiarize themselves with Susquehanna Life magazine by reading a current issue, as well as the magazine's Advertising Guide.
Students are required to come to the first class with an understanding of the magazine's target
audience and circulation area plus three article ideas for
the winter issue to be created by students
enrolled in the class. The course is recommended for
juniors and seniors, but sophomores who have completed relevant coursework or
experience are also welcome.
Shames was recommended for the position by Dr. Laurence Roth, Co-Chair, Department of English and Creative Writing, and Dr. Valerie Martin, Dean, School of Arts and Sciences.
