Erica L. Shames, founder and publisher of Susquehanna Life magazine, has been named to Folio’s 2016 class of Top Women in Media.
“The annual Folio: Top Women in Media Awards celebrates the creativity and accomplishments of female colleagues,” Folio announced in a press release. “Each class of honorees has fearlessly moved their teams, brands and companies forward, made strides in their respective markets, and created lasting impressions on their colleagues.”
Each year, a select group of women are hand-picked by the Folio team to represent the best and brightest rising stars, entrepreneurs, director-level doers, corporate visionaries and industry leaders.
Erica Shames, who won in the Entrepreneur category, joins other 2016 class of honorees including: Entertainment Weekly’s Ellie Duque, Forbes Media’s Jessica Sibley, Kisho Media’s Tasheema Prince, New Hope Natural Media’s Carlota Mast, Bloomberg’s Laura Zelenko and Idea Couture’s Ashley Perez.
Among Shames’ accomplishments highlighted by Folio: Since 1993, Susquehanna Life magazine has earned accolades from Folio magazine as a “Small Magazine We Adore”; the Greater Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce named the magazine Small Business of the Year; and WVIA-TV profiled Shames in a series on entrepreneurs, then hired her to host WVIA's State of PA show, seen by 194,000 viewers weekly.
Shames was named one of Pennsylvania’s Best 50 Women in Business by PA’s Office of Community & Economic Development.
Erica has taught a class in Bucknell University’s Arts in Entrepreneurship program and in Fall 2016 she will be Susquehanna University’s first Professional in Residence, teaching a course on magazine publishing. Erica gives speeches about her life as an entrepreneur to students and businesspeople, encouraging audiences to dream big and achieve their goals.
Lamenting the lack of support for professional women, in 2013 Erica co-founded the Women’s Professional Partnership. In partnership with Bucknell University, she led a group to create the Empowering Our Region Through Mentoring and Leadership conference.
Erica has raised three boys, Justin, 26; Ben, 23; and Jordan, 20, and is married to Bucknell University professor Tony Massoud.
“After 23 years, I’m still passionate about Susquehanna Life magazine and the 25-county region it serves,” Shames said. “I am proud to make my dream of starting a lifestyle magazine come true, and to have helped make the Susquehanna River corridor a destination.”
“Live the Region…,” Shames encourages her 53,000 readers, “Let Us Show You How!” They eagerly comply.
Honorees will be recognized and celebrated on Thursday, June 9, 2016 at the Yale Club in New York City and will be highlighted in a special Top Women in Media issue of Folio: magazine, a trade publication for the media industry.
