Rich Huff Operation Santa Claus Chinese/Silent Auction Returns This May

Feb 27, 2016 05:46PM ● By Erica Shames

Rich Huff, a Lewisburg High School graduate, played Santa Claus each year at the Lycoming Mall. After dying from complications from a house fire in Watsontown three years ago, people from his church, Christ Lutheran Church, in West Milton, wanted to honor him by keeping his spirit alive through this fund.

“This fund has helped children in many different ways in the Warrior Run, Milton, Lewisburg and Mifflinburg communities,” explained Jane Mertz, sponsorship co-chair. “We help when there is an immediate need that might be overlooked. We work with the school nurses and guidance counselors of each district (along with the parents/guardians involved). Over the past several years we have been able to help many, many children.”

Among the items purchased over the past year, as a result of last year’s fundraiser, include:

various items for Head Start students and Haven Ministries children; bunk beds for two brothers; sneakers, boots and socks; monetary donation for a boy’s new wheelchair; back-to-school shoes and clothes for a family with three children; a car seat; summer camp expenses for four students; bagged lunches for a summer school program; and, most recently, supplies for a group of needy Boy Scouts.

This year Rich Huff Operation Santa Claus will give an award to two high school seniors who embody the same caring spirit as Rich.

The auction takes place May 14, at Christ Lutheran Church. More information is available by calling: (570) 971-9534. Donations may be sent to: United in Christ Lutheran Church, PO Box 95, West Milton, PA 17886.
