The Weis Center for the Performing Arts at Bucknell University - Lewisburg, PA will present Colombian world music ensemble Cimarrón on Wednesday, Sept. 16, at 7:30 p.m. at the Campus Theatre, 413 Market St. in downtown Lewisburg. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.
There will be a free lecture and demonstration by members of the ensemble on Sept. 16 at 12 p.m. in the Weis Center Lobby.
Cimarrón is a seven-piece band led by harpist and composer Carlos Rojas. The group hails from the Los Llanos Orientales region of Colombia, where life revolves around work on cattle ranches. Music accompanies daily tasks such as milking and cattle drives. Cimarrón explores and experiments with their rich heritage while retaining the essence of the musical tradition.
Their repertoire includes the festive dance music called joropo, which consists of rippling melodies played on harp, bandola and cuatro accompanied by bass, cajon and maracas. This rapid and joyous music is sung with high-pitched voices reminiscent of Andalusian gypsy roots.
Cimarrón has performed in Venezuela, Mexico, Guatemala, Sweden, France, Italy, England and the United States. Their album Si Soy Llanero was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2005.
General admission tickets for the performance are $10 for adults, $8 for seniors 62+, $5 for youth 18 and under, $5 for Bucknell employees and retirees (limit 2), free for Bucknell students (limit 2), and $5 for non-Bucknell college students (limit 2).
Tickets can be purchased at http://www.bucknell.edu/BoxOffice or by calling the Campus Box Office at 570-577-1000.
The Cimarrón tour is made possible by Southern Exposure: Performing Arts of Latin America, a program of Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts.
