The fourth annual Lumberjack Triathlon is slated for 7:30 a.m. Sunday, August, 9 and will be hosted at West Branch Boat Club, 1 Summer St., near Candy Cane Lane in South Williamsport.
The triathlon will be the same distance as last year with some minor modifications in the course to accommodate increased interest. Last year’s triathlon welcomed ten relay teams and more than 58 individual participants. Participants of the triathlon ages 10- 67 swam 800 yards, biked 13.7 miles and ran 5K.
The most difficult part of organizing a triathlon is finding a suitable location for the swim while also accommodating the biking and running portions. West Branch Boat Club’s generous property donation makes the triathlon possible, as well as the participation of members of the club who are instrumental in the design and safety of parts of the race.
Sue Smith, head coach of Williamsport Area Swim Club and race organizer for the event, saw a void in the area for this type of endurance event. As a triathlete herself, Smith wishes for Williamsport to become a part of the triathlon community and help contribute to the sport’s growth. Smith aims to gain positive exposure for her organization and locally elevate participation in the sport. She stated that “The Lumberjack…promotes Williamsport as a healthy community whose residents appreciate the lifelong fitness benefits associated with swimming, cycling and running”.Advanced sign up for participation in the triathlon is encouraged. Costs of the race are as follows, with first price listed for registration prior to July 1, and second for registration on or after July 1: Individuals $60, $80; Relay $110, $130; 14&U Individual $35, $45; 14&U Relay $65, $75; Military Individual $50, $50 and Military Relay $75, $75.
