Bucknell Observatory to hold Family Night Feb. 27

The Observatory at Bucknell University will host a Family Night Friday, Feb. 27, from 7 to 9:30 p.m.

The event, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by the Bucknell University Department of Physics & Astronomy and the Isaac J. Tressler Fund for Astronomy.

The event, which focuses on activities for children and their families, will feature singer/songwriter KJ Reimensnyder-Wagner, who will entertain children with songs about stars, constellations, and other celestial phenomena.

Bucknell Physics & Astronomy Professor Ned Ladd will present "What's a Constellation?" an interactive talk designed for children of all ages.

Children can make their own glow-in-the-dark constellations and participate in other star-studded craft activities.

The Observatory's telescopes will be open for viewing of the planet Jupiter and other wonders of the deep sky (if skies are clear). Facilities include the 127-year old Clark refracting telescope and the brand new Tressler Observing Lab, Bucknell's newest space for observing the sky which features several new telescopes and a retractable roof. Bucknell astronomy students will be on hand to run the telescopes and point out the constellations visible in the winter sky.

"Family Night is a great opportunity for parents and kids of all ages to get out of the house on a winter's night and explore the sky together," said Ladd. "We really look forward to opening our facilities to the public on Family Night." The event will proceed rain or shine.

The Bucknell Observatory is located on the southern end of the Bucknell University campus, just south of the Christy Mathewson-Memorial stadium. Ample parking is available. Call 570-577-1207 for information.
