BILL Tea & Talk program Feb 26: 'West Branch of the Susquehanna'

Feb 12, 2015 03:17PM ● Published by Erica Shames

The Bucknell Institute for Lifelong Learning (BILL) will present the discussion, "Past, Present and Future of the West Branch Susquehanna River," Thursday, Feb. 26, at 3:30 p.m. at Buffalo Valley Lutheran Village at The Village Common, located at 6 Tressler Blvd. in Lewisburg.

The program, part of the BILL Tea & Talk series, is free and open to the public without registration. Tea time refreshments are provided free of charge. Doors open at 3 p.m.

Jessica Newlin, assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering at Bucknell, will examine the impacts of glaciers 2 million years ago on the West Branch of the Susquehanna River.

Scientists and engineers working with the Watershed Sciences and Engineering Program in Bucknell's Center for Sustainability and Environment have been collecting data about the river by mapping the current river bed and analyzing potential flood flows during several glacial advances. The team also is investigating current variations in river water temperature to understand the future conditions of the river given current management practices. "Water temperature is often an indicator of water quality and ecosystem health of the river system," Newlin said.

Directions

From the intersection of State Route 45 and U.S. Route 15 in Lewisburg, drive west on SR 45 for 1.1 miles; turn right (north) onto Reitz Boulevard into Brookpark Farm. Drive 0.6 mile; turn left onto Tressler Boulevard. The Village Common is directly ahead.

The BILL Lunch & Learn presentation schedule continues with "Band History and Performance Through the Penn Central Wind Band Lens" with William Kenny, Bucknell professor of music and founder of the Penn Central Wind Band, on April 7.

The Bucknell Institute for Lifelong Learning has provided adult learners in the Central Susquehanna Valley a broad range of educational and intellectual opportunities since its inauguration during the fall of 2009. The Institute is a self-supporting affiliate of Bucknell University. All of its programs and events are supported by membership and course registration fees and donations from members and friends.
