The Bucknell University Dance Company will co-host dancers and musicians from Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Shanghai Normal University as part of a cultural exchange.
The visiting artists, who will be at Bucknell from Nov. 30 through Dec. 6, will work with Bucknell student and faculty dancers.
Bucknell dance professor Kelly Knox and a Chinese professor will choreograph a piece for dancers from both groups.
The collaborative effort will lead to the East Meets West: Fall Dance Gala, directed by Bucknell dance professor Er-Dong Hu on Dec. 5 and 6 at 7:30 p.m. in the Harvey M. Powers Theatre in Coleman Hall at Bucknell. Tickets are $10; $5 for students and seniors.
The program will feature a variety of works, including four pieces from Shanghai that offer a taste of traditional Chinese dance styles, as well as five musician pieces performed by guest artists.
In addition, the concert will feature two faculty premieres by Hu and Knox. Hu is creating a lush, captivating modern piece with aerial work on 40-foot-long silk fabric and Knox is creating a movement collage based on ideas of communication and human connection.
New York guest artist Salim Gauwloos is choreographing a dynamic new work, "9", and Chelsea Dieck, a 2013 Bucknell alumna, will return from her graduate work at Columbia University to restage a contemporary ballet work she created while a student at Bucknell.
